Liara, my friend Dominic recently wrote this on his weblog: “30 years ago i thought that i would get ‘enlightened’ any moment; i had no idea of the infinite depth of ‘any moment’. There is still a sense of doership, but I can see that the grace of…

Mark, this is fantastic news about the book (as well as the revamped Eternal Awareness, of course). Right from the start, I thought there was a book in the ‘Art of Giving’ series: the message of those pieces must be at least as important - and, gene…

I forget where I read this, but someone once said that he had much more often had cause for comfort from the things he didn't say than the ones he did say. Comfort for whom, though? And of what kind? Silence can be an expression of wisdom, but also…

Please tell us a little about yourself, and what brings you here.
Hi, I'm James Souttar. I’m 48, male, a design consultant working in London. I moderate another Ning community (and what Mark kindly describes as a ‘sister site’ to this one): Hidden Recess.

I've been fortunate to have ‘been around’ the Sufi Way pretty much all of my adult life. My first ’director of consciousness’ was Mehmet Ali Bülent Rauf (1911–1978), ‘consultant’ to the Beshara School, and one of the foremost exponents of the Wahdat al-Wujud (‘Unity of Existence’) of the great C12/13 C.E. Sufi Muhyiddin Ibn Al-Arabi. I did the last Beshara eight month intensive course at Sherborne House in Gloucestershire, over the winter of 1979–80.

From 1981 to 1996 I was a student of Sayed Idries Shah. I carried out the task of reading and ’familiarising’ myself with his work under the direction of The Society for Sufi Studies – and had the good fortune to meet Shah a few times. From 1983 until its closure in 1990, I was also an associate member of the College of Storytellers – an organisation started by Shah to revive and promote the art of storytelling.

In the autumn of 1996, a couple of months before Shah's death, I had my first encounter with my master, A.O. – without knowing, at the time, who he was. It took six years, and a series of coincidences, to reconnect. In April 1993 I was accepted as a disciple and, thankfully, have been under his benevolent direction and discipline ever since.

James,
Thank you so much for joining. You always inspire me, and you have a wonderfully inspiring, thought-provoking and enjoyable web site at Hidden Recess. Things are better, and I feel better, now that you're here.
Mark
